A director buddy of mine in Houston knew Shelly Duvall for the past decade. One of his stories:
“Reminds me I worked with Shelley, we used to take smoke breaks and she would tell me war stories. One was when she was getting ready to go to London to begin shooting The Shining, Kubrick –or one of his people – asked if she had any special requests for her living accommodations. They were putting her up in an apartment. She said she didn’t like the color orange. When she arrived, Stanley had had the apartment painted orange.”
Well said, Alan. You’ve summed it up perfectly. I thought her characters were both otherworldly and vulnerable, thinking especially of the films 3 Women, The Shining, and Popeye. I was sort of lovestruck by her character in Brewster McCloud when I was a child. Loved her in Nashville and McCabe & Mrs. Miller is a favourite.

Shelley Duvall always brought a certain warmth to all of her characters. She was certainly one of a kind.😌
