Bill, after a couple of days thought, I’m still no nearer to an explanation as to why I don’t like the album. I do not want to upset other forum members who obviously love everything you release, so I need to be careful what I say. I was subject to abuse on this forum last year for speaking my mind. It is a sorry state of affairs though to censor what I think so as not to upset other people.
All I can say Bill is that my musical taste is not stagnant and frozen in the past. I do not expect new renditions of what you did in the 70s and 80s. I believe my taste in music is exceptionally varied and I truly like most of what you do. As I own everything you have ever recorded apart from two albums if my data is correct, to not like the odd one here and there is surely acceptable. I follow the artist Tim Hecker and own everything he has released. He came up with an absolute stinker of an album last year, in my opinion! He has just released another album drawing on the previous year’s work, and it is good. I think it is healthy to criticize. Life would be boring if everything was perfect.
I will listen to Secret Club... again and my opinion may change. To lie and say it is brilliant at this juncture wouldn’t rest easy in my mind. I don’t want another Futurama styled album. That is the past, but it is I think it healthy to every so often reminisce!
Very interesting. Of course you're entitled to your own opinion and everyone's taste is different to some extent, but...I wonder if you'd like to explain, in detail, what it is you don't like about the album? I'm sure we'd be fascinated to hear the reasoning behind such a seemingly dismissive statement. \
There's a fair amount of variety on that album but nothing too remote from any other albums I've made, so I'm curious to know just how you've come to such a negative conclusion, particulary when so many other fans really seem to like it. Care to elucidate? 🤔
Good points all. This record knocks me out. Am yuge fan of 'Venus Over Vegas' ... 'VOV' with that cool title is a nice Sci-Fi Exotica image to contemplate and yet when I listened to it yesterday evening, thinking about that title, what I immediately started to eyes-closed see were '50s Moderne boomerangs, stars, explosions, zigs and zags, mostly -- but not all -- pastel colours ... and all colliding ... deftly.
"That Was a Beautiful Dream, She Said" has been a personal favorite ever since it came out. Probably a Top 10 for me that I keep returning to. Seems to have all the ingredients: lush imagery, romantic lyrics, soaring guitar solos, etc, etc....

Just played the album. Sorry; I don't like it. Sorry to be a party pooper amongst the favourable views!
Whoops! I didn't see your comment from April 5th John; sorry! The two left are 'Astroloops' and 'Caliban and the Chrome Harmonium'.
After the purchase of this I only have two releases to complete my Bill Nelson 21st Century collection.

I feel that this has always been an underrated album. It is filled with a great variety of styles. A classic 'Nelsonica' release.

Fabulous, Diverse, Album. I was lucky to get my hands on one. If you don't have this set of songs, jump on it here. Well worth the price.
