Red Noise Box Set on Cherry Red Website

I have two drives and on my usual one used, EAC with disc 3 had major problems, particularly with reading track 18. It eventually completed with a timing error message but had brief gaps in the audio. Using the other drive, it completed with no errors but several times slowed down to a near standstill and the last minute of the disc took five minutes to complete.

I tried Audiograbber and that seemed much better - there were some brief reading pauses but these were only momentary and the output was fine. Doesn't do flac, though.

I'll see how the other discs go.

I had a nightmare of a time getting disc 3 to read. I’d had one or two sector retry errors on the first two discs, but when it came to the third, I had to endure a couple of minutes of whirring, ka-chunks, braaaps and so forth before it’d even admit that there was a disc in the drive. I had this same problem with three drives. The disc itself looked fine, no scratches at all, and I’d been scrupulous with the lint-free wipes, but I’ve yet to get a clean read for my archive - I rip CDs as single FLACs with a cue sheet using XLD (Mac) since it means I can squeeze a little more on the BD-XLs I use for backups. XLD tended to grind to a halt at about track 11. I had to fall back to dbPowerAmp, and rip it on a track by track basis, and on track 11 it just kept dropping to lower and lower read levels until it was literally reading sectors rather than frames. It still failed on about 30 attempts over the three drives, giving error messages that suggested the lead-in data for the track was corrupt until it finally, just the once, read and verified. Tracks 12-14 also took a few tries to rip.

All of which makes me suspicious of the fabrication on that one disc. I’d be a happier camper had I got a nice clean read as with all the other discs. The (ripped) track plays OK, but I’m wary of playing the CD itself since I’ve had drives die on me before because of dodgy CDs beating drive motors until they give up.

All discs ripped fine, no problems at all.

The tracks are listed in the Cherry Red ad for disc 1 of the 2 disc set so a bit misleading if they are not there. I've got the six disc set and the BBC session is at the end of disc 1, with the same track listing as disc 1 of the two disc set.

The BBC tracks are squeezed into the foot of the cd label slightly gapped from the others and a very quick glance could make it look like there are only two bonus tracks 13 and 14. There are 4 BBC tracks 15 to 18.

I was hoping they just forgot to list them on the package, but no such luck—only 14 tracks on disc one.

Oh dear. I've got the full 18 and have played it to check. To look at the track listings currently showing (until customer feedback, I assume) in the Cherry Red links above, the two disc set appears identical to discs 1 and 3 of the larger set but clearly they are not, at least for disc 1. I guess that is a copy and paste error on Cherry Red's part.

Yes, I find that gets confusing with all the box sets. It’s best to simplify the lists.
