Ironically, just got thru listening to it before I read this post. Still holding up well! "Once Upon a River" (groovy drums!) and "When Art Schools Shaped Tomorrow" continue to be instant standouts. Agreed with all the above comments. Atmospheric with some great instrumental interludes (and ebow!).
Hard to believe that the 'Old Haunts' launch party was a year ago at Leeds Clothworker's Hall. It doesn't seem that long ago. I remember that it was difficult for me as my mother was still very ill in hospital and I had to take two or three days off from visiting her to rehearse and perform at the event. I felt very guilty about that but tickets had already been sold and I had to honour that fact and see it through.
I love this album and it’s been the most played here in Northern Nevada the last year ..... Bill mentioned that there was a monitor mix version of “as the stars began to glow “ will we ever hear this Bill ?
@steve lyles The songs that were recorded on my old system are now, sadly, no longer accessible due to both the breakdown and obsolescence of the technology I was using back then. All I can say is that I've managed to archive several album's worth of material on CDR from the old system and these will be properly mastered and emerge over the coming years..
Yet still nobody writes a track by track review...eg: Track 1 (a vocal track) is a slow ballad in 3/4 time beginning with old radio show
voice loops, random electronic noises with clean electric guitar and string bass, building up with the introduction of gentle percussion and distant e-bow. Later in the song as it changes into 4/4 time a simple lounge style jazz guitar solo takes centre stage ...a sudden false ending morphs into an impressive jazz fusion improvisation showcasing some outstanding left of centre guitar playing ...the lyrics allude to the now well known story surrounding Bill's romantic interlude on the banks of the river Humber outside
the Duke of Cumberland...etc...well you get the idea...something like that.
Come on guys, get it in perspective...you've just received a Bill Nelson CD through the post...it's really big news...most everyday people don't get Bill Nelson CDs and I'm sure would love to show a photograph of it.

A signed copy...all the way to Chicago. I didn't even know it was a possibility. Never thought I'd have Bill's autograph. How lovely after listening for over 40 years.
Interesting to hear that the vocals are mixed more to the front on this CD. I've thought that they've been much too low in the mix for quite a while.
Also, I would much prefer to see the lyrics in the album 'booklet' rather than the usual treated photographs....failing that, maybe they could be put on this web site somewhere. I'm sure everyone would love to read the lyrics.
Pleased you're enjoying the new album! On first listen it may seem a bit 'darker' than previous albums, but it's a gentle darkness that sparkles with beautiful light. It's a mature album in some ways, an 'adult' album for grown-ups who seek something with a little more depth and self-reflection, rather than the more 'la-la-la' dancing around your handbag stuff. It's simply a message from the heart and where I am at this particular point in time, as all my albums are. Just another statement of the here and now, a diary entry, a mark on the calendar. It goes on, ever forward and always in flux...
First impressions: another diverse lot of songs with the usual superb guitar playing and, to these ears, some newfangled synth, drums and percussion sounds (is this the new drum machine?). There’s also the playfulness, which is always refreshing, though the overall tone is rather somber. The entire CD is like a journey that should be listened to start to finish. Some of the tracks are downright epic with the intricate arrangements and twists and turns of the drum programming. I’m looking forward to repeated listens of this one, for sure!
Purely enjoying Old Haunts that I received today. This CD is putting me on mood swings! Bill knocked out another master piece! Fantastic and brilliant from end to end !! Outrageously Done !!
What!!!?? £65 on eBay?? Someone is taking the p**s and trying to profit from the event by attempting to rip off fans. There are plenty of signed copies available from Burning Shed folks. DON'T succumb to this sort of cynical and despicable exploitation.
Yep, mine too has arrived, bearing a signature as well. Looking forward to giving this a play today, off to see Rae Morris later at Lancaster town hall, should be interesting.
I seem to be the first non-attendee at Saturday's great event to have received my copy of Old Haunts - this morning, on the doorstep. Not only that, but it is indeed an autographed copy. Thanks for your kind work with that gold pen, Bill!
It's a very lovely package with a real mood to it - time to listen to the album now and find out if the mood is sustained there too.
“Old Haunts” released on this day, in 2019.
Happy second birthday!

Love your review, Major. I'm still waiting for my copy. Hopefully, it'll arrive today. Fingers crossed.

Arrived today in Kansas City.
And by golly, it’s a signed copy.
Many thanks, Mr. Nelson.

A non-autographed copy came today. I will savor it.
Arrived today. Enjoying its sparkling darkness as sun sets on bay.

Mine arrived yesterday. Whoo hoo, a signed copy.

My copy arrived in today's mail and I am spinning it now for the first time, and enjoying it very much.

Arrived this morning. Clearly the signed copies have run out (feigns disgust and outrage).
Will get a few listens in this weekend.

You too can have a signed one. Only £65 on eBay :(
