Hi all
In 1980 I somehow found myself wandering around Ingleston Market in Scotland. Having always been a big fan of all things Bill, I picked up a cassette of Modern Music. Got back to barracks and wacked it on the old Sanyo blaster. My overriding impression at the time was this was just about the best thing I had heard in a very long time. Poetic, majestic and about as well produced as my tiny mind could process.
Last week, some 40 years, massive learning curve and emotional shrapnel later the remastered version arrives. To say I am impressed is really an understatement. I am hearing stuff that was there 40 years ago that my [much younger] ears didn't even pick up.
Awesome and spellbinding comes close. I was grinning so much my earphones nearly came off.
Bill, you are one of the best songwriters and dream creators we have ever seen. I was actually 20 years old again for a short while.
God bless and a peaceful Christmas to you and yours.
I have to admit I haven't tried the original mix yet, just the new mix. This I listened to on my Sennheiser cans,so maybe a bit too detailed without a tweak on the amp.
I will make a point of listening to the others real soon. Futurama box set on it's way now so lots to sit down and really relax to. On another note,it was a really well put together pack and it was great to see the retro programme and artwork.
The whole album is a masterpiece, always was.
After reading your post I was motivated to listen to the whole album again.
I went for the original mix that was part of the latest Cherry Red box set.
It transported me back to when I was 17/18 and it is such a great album and the Modern Music Suite is a delight.
I played track 1 of the new stereo mix, it's clearer, more defined, but on an initial listen lacked a bit of atmosphere. I'll give the whole album mix a run through another time, but thank you for pushing me to re listen.
