In David Foster Wallace's 1072 page postmodern novel "Infinite Jest," a character named Otis P. Lord spends the last third of the novel in the hospital with his head trapped in a combination television/computer monitor, which I always thought might have been a nod to "Drastic Plastic"'s back cover. "Infinite Jest" is replete with all sorts of classic rock references, with characters named Dr. Robert and so on, so it's not impossible.
Good call! Watching this series on Netflix at the moment and I really like it!
