Hi Bill, Have just gone to Burning Shed store to buy your Stand By Light is Coming CD.
Wow! They are not scared of the prices. £15 for the CD is expensive these days, but what stopped me
purchasing was the postage £4.20 !, Seriously ! It's a CD not Vinyl.
Sorry Bill I'm a big fan, but that's expensive.
Regards Martin
Well, just remember that Burning Shed is just about the only access to Bill Nelson music out there. You can get some older stuff through Bill’s area on Bandcamp, but that is download-only. At least you’d save on the postage costs.
This is Bill’s bread & butter. Don’t begrudge him an income. Yes, it is more than many other CDs available. But many of those artists are selling many, many more units than Our Man Bill.
As for postage, Bill’s operation is in the UK. So postal costs to elsewhere in the world will be… more. Bill has zero control over that.
Just know you are getting great music you are not going to find at your local shop, anywhere.
And know you are directly supporting the artist.
.
I think there may have been a little confusion over the p&p prices. I’ve just double checked and the price to UK is £2.20 (inc VAT), there are other options, for example insured or couriered deliveries, which obviously cost extra...but just opt for standard shipping if the cost is an issue! Or wait for the Bandcamp ‘download’ release...shipping for that is VERY reasonable! 😬😜
I agree that the postage may be a little high, but to the OP I'd ask - if postage was just 3.20 or 2.20 would you have bought it? My point being - don't miss out for the sake of a pound or two. Of course everyone's finances are different so I'm not trying to be preachy. I have just checked my invoice and I was charged 3.33 UK Pounds to deliver to the States.
As to the price of the cd - I think it's fair. I bought a Dan Stuart cd in '95 that cost almost the same. I have played and enjoyed this hundreds of times.
Surely the fact that Bill‘s releases have for several years been able to sellout in a matter of days allows him to command a fair price which £15 is.
Btw I was pleasantly surprised to find that Burning Shed have an in-house pressing plant in Norwich
If you think £15 for a CD is expensive, have you considered the actual amount of work that goes into producing the end product, much of it by one man?, as a 'cottage-industry'..and also, if comparing to other CD's one buys, maybe at a cheaper price, just how much actual music you get on each CD?..I would imagine the vast majority of Bill Nelson CD album releases exceed one hours worth of music on each, which means you are probably getting anywhere from 50% to 100% more music on each album, compared to the average CD released...so, if you look at it from that angle, you're probably getting a very good deal from Bill's CD releases.
You'll regret not owning Light. It's a stunner. I've no complaint with SoS, but Bill's is better hands with Burning Shed. Music media distribution is what they do. Also, there's a lot of great other artists to explore there. Bill's music is in good company and hopefully will give him more exposure to like-minded listeners.
Martin, I encourage you to take the leap. You will find that the Light to be worth every penny. If you don't, I'll buy you a pint the next time I'm in England.
Best, John
The CD price is set by Bill and is the same price (for a single CD) that it has been for many years, ever since he started releasing his albums independently.
As for the postage - that does seem quite high, the last item I had delivered from BS was £1.85 postage (plus VAT). Which I think is VERY reasonable...the total for a CD including delivery is actually over £1 cheaper (for the UK) than it was through Sound On Sound.
Just saying... 😜
