Hi Bill, or anyone who can input on this? I know you probably play bass guitar aswell? Just wondering what bass, or basses you have, and what model you favour? Thanks in advance.
Just listened to “King Of The Cowboys” for the first time in a while. Funky thumping and popping bass by Bill. It’s kind of a Ska bass line to my ears or at least Caribbean style, merry-go-round, dub merrymakings.
Cool. Squier guitars and basses are good. I've got a Vintage (brand) V4 precison bass. It was cheap, but all the frets were squint, so I took them all out. When I have time I am going to finish converting this neck to fretless, using maple inserts in the fret grooves, and layers os superglue to coat the fretboard.
I do own a Squier fretless jazz bass. I bought it because it was the only fretless bass I could find with fret markers on the fretboard (I have subsequently acquired a Chowny semi-acoustic fretless bass with markers, but that was a special one-off they made for a trade exhibition). Never understood the reason for not making life easier for the player by having markers on fretless basses.
That's interesting. If I had the skill to make my own instruments, I'd be inclined to make them look unique, but then, I am naturally drawn to the quirky and alternative.
That's cool. I mainly make my own, out of parts I have lying around. I'm a bit of a traditionalist. It's the Fender types I like. I have a more modern looking Yamaha though, stock, unmodified which I like.
I have to admit that the aesthetics of an instrument do play a strong part in my purchasing choices, but I'll always check out online reviews to try to make sure I'm not buying a 'dog'.
Mavericks aren't made anymore, but do occasionally turn up second-hand (a company in the UK were selling them refurbished on Amazon for £399, but they appear to have sold them all). I believe Italia Mondials are still in production and will set you back around £750 new or £450 - £500 second-hand.
The punchiest bass I have is the Maverick B1 which is active with a 3 band EQ. It also has roller volume controls. The most versatile is the Italia Mondial Classic which is also active. It has a humbucker and piezo pickup with completely separate volume and tone controls (the piezo has a 2 band EQ) and jack sockets allowing me to run the humbucker through one effect and the piezo through another (a distorted piezo and a clean humbucker through a whammy pedal is my favourite).
On Bill’s latest guitar list ( March 2020) I only saw two basses in his current collection , an Eros MK 2 and a Yamaha. Not to say he hasn’t had others, in fact I’d be shocked if he hadn’t!
@Radium Girl If he has time, perhaps Bill may be able to clarify? I favour Fender Precision type basses, due to their punch and low end, Jazz basses can be too nasal.

See my comments on this model in an earlier post. Great bass.

Interesting. Great looking basses too.
