Thaks for posting this Alec!...I can't remember having ever seen this before.
Bill's responces just shone as usual and he's always great to watch in such situations. He really would/should be every interviewer's dream-guest...and the couple of bits of humour thrown in, effortless and clever...Yes, I could watch Bill 'all night long' in situations like this, and on that kind of form..and looking really cool too! (great hair)...It's a good job he was there, or the whole thing would have fallen rather flat.
However, I was rather surprised by the comments made by guy who posted this video on TY, where he says it was "Sylvian's bad luck sadly" re the three guests chosen to critique his BT album...Bill's comments were excellent, and overall, very positive... he was honest and open, very fair in overall evaluation and he did say how much he ended up enjoying the album after several listens, which is always a good sign, especially in relation to showing the depth of a piece of music, etc.......Gary Kemp was honest too, and you have to respect that, people's individual views, but he also did say he liked the album and Sandie basically just said how much she liked it...So how he says that was Sylvian's bad luck is a little beyond me...You have to be able to listen to and accept people's criticisms/point of view, as well as their positive thoughts and responces.
It was Sylvian's good luck Bill was there to give his thoughts, which were, overall, very positive. The reality was it was Bill Nelson that gave the connoisseur's appraisal in this TV interview and I would imagine David Sylvian would have been very pleased and happy with Bill's musings.
If I recall correctly, it was due to Bill’s positive comments regarding ‘Brilliant Trees’ that lead to David contacting Bill and the pair becoming friends…which included David inviting him along to his exhibition of photography and, of course, Bill’s contribution on the ‘Gone To Earth’ album.
So, I think the ‘bad luck’ comment would be viewed by both Bill and David as incredibly inaccurate, as that particular TV show spawned a great friendship.
Indeed, and also viewed by true fans/admirers of both artists as incredibly inaccurate.
However, the 'bad luck' comment really is just a minor trifling and completely unimportant, history, as they say, speaks for itself.
I thought it worth a mention, because I was initially rather perplexed/slightly annoyed by his comment..and there may be one or two who watch this video from here in DV, who are not be familiar with the friendship and musical relationship Bill and David have, and the recordings they have done together, so it was just a little 'beware' pointer....It seems rather apparent to me that this guy doesn't have a deal of knowledge on the subject, but hey, I'm pleased he posted the video.
Thanks for that little bit of info re David contacting Bill after he made those positive comments, Jon, it definitely helps colour-in some background detail...I sure would have liked to have visited Sylvian's photography exhibition back then, especially when Bill attended........and, regarding Gone To Earth, well I think almost everyone here would agree it's a wonderful album....'Before The Bullfight' is one of those magical tracks that only come around every so often..an eternal favourite for me, and wonderful guitar contribution from Bill..the whole thing is just perfection..😎
