Only now read of the death of legendary photographer Baron Wolman. Baron photographed virtually every major rock star in the 'sixties when he was Rolling Stone magazine's chief photographer. His iconic photographs of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and so many others are highly regarded classics. He was Rolling Stone magazine's official photographer at the famous Woodstock Festival too.
A few years back, when I was invited to be a guest at Classic Rock magazine's annual awards ceremony, the magazine arranged for me to be seated at a table next to Baron who turned out to be a charming and erudite man, an ideal companion and conversationalist throughout the evening. His stories of photographing so many stellar musicians were fascinating. It was a privilege to be in his company for a few hours.
Baron Wolman passed away on the 2nd of November due to complications from Motor Neurone disease.
My sympathies to his family and loved ones.
And yes, yet another cruel blow from this cruellest of years...
Hey Alec,
Thanks for the links. My goodness - what photographs, such history - magnificent.
Best,
