Here’s some new music that may be of interest to fellow Bill Nelson listeners.
(I hope it’s OK to post a link to my bandcamp page here - I see others have done it).
My first release for many years is an EP featuring some melodic pieces in my distinctive style, followed by some more "ambient" experiments with infinite guitar and strings.
Enjoy - and please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
Martin.
Martin Coles just released Red Skies, check it out here
Here’s what they say about it:
“What’s that new sound?
At long last…
I’ve just completed some new music.
Please have a listen at martincoles.bandcamp.com
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Martin.”
As already mentioned, House of Cards is a film/TV theme in waiting. Catchy and thoughtful, it has all these little bits tucked in the stereo spectrum that get noticed on repeated listens. Mist has superb Ebow work, with the string rattle adding a percussive touch. You got me all jazzed to hit the studio today and knock out some music. Red Skies #2 and 3 are hopefully on deck for the next release.
Hi Alec,
Thanks very much for your enthusiasm and admiration of my new project - you really have an insight.
For me (and Thomas Edison) it’s 1% inspiration followed by 99% perspiration to complete a piece of music to my entire satisfaction.
So it’s really gratifying to read that someone else has really got something out of it.
Also, it reassures me that it’s worthwhile continuing.
I hope to start work on my next recording project following a well-earned summer break.
Thanks again for listening and following.
Martin.
Really enjoying these, Martin.
The first one House Of Cards, I admire how you honoured the trickiness of the groove and accommodated it, making everything else obey its gait. Gives it strength plus uniqueness.
I admire your economy and crispness in these tracks as well. All of them are pleasing and elevating, leaving the listener happy and wanting more.
Ah well, lol, I didn't explain it very well (at all really).
There is no connection, only one which clicked in my mind almost instantly, when I heard the keyboards in the track 'Dust' kick in (around 42 seconds in), and I just thought/imagined that would work/fit in perfectly, as part of the score for Gregory's Girl...just my mind/imagination going off at a tangent. But that's the great thing about stimulating music, it does just that, it stimulates and takes you to strange places, conjured as if by magic.
Agree on the Colin Tully film score...I'm a big fan of great film scores, such an integral part of a great movie and can definitely elevate a film to a higher level. I'm a massive fan of ambient/experimental/filmic sounding music and one of my favourite things I like to do is when on a longish train journey, find a window seat if possible, listen to something 'ambient/atmospheric', eg David Sylvian 'Approaching Silence' and then just observe the landscape flow by...It can make for a great journey, and also stimulate ideas re art and photography and music.
Hope that explains a little why I made the comment, really all down to the stimulating music and one's parallel imagination.
When I listen to 'Dust', it makes me think of the film 'Gregory's Girl'.
'Targets'...stunning.
I'll keep an eye out for future releases......Good luck with this one, it's a cracker and it's on my must buy music list.
Just had a listen to your new release Martin and before I make a comment, I must stress it's not influenced by your (kind and generous) post in the BN potential album covers thread.
Well, what a wonderful EP, knocked my socks off immediately and I really love it. A great balance of songs that flow really well...The opener, 'House Of Cards', could easily be a piece for film or TV..and similar thoughts for 'Dust', with it's slightly more melancholic edge..Opening and closing tracks, for opening and closing credits?...well, what do I know?..lol...but that's the instant vibe I got...great stuff.
The remaining four track are right up my street, fantastically atmospheric and ambient..'Targets' is simply beautiful, 'Mist' could easily be from a forthcoming BN release, 'Red Sky #1', I love it's dark and brooding soundscape, wonderful and 'Red Sky #4', again, simply beautiful, perfect track to end.
You certainly have your own sound Martin, great playing all round..and I can hear little hints of Bill Nelson and Robert Fripp in your playing and composition, but still very much your own work..I presume they may be an influence to your playing?..to my ears at least.
Finally, I think you have kept the length of tracks and the overall length of the EP just right...It's tight and concise, keeps a great flow without 'meandering' for too long and getting lost and kind of has that less is more, re track length, keeping you absolutely fixed on the overall recording and then leaving you wanting more!
Superb mate, well done......You should be proud.
...Nearly forgot to mention, love the album artwork too...👍
