Written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones, a pilot and eight subsequent episodes, spanning two series transmitted on BBC 2 between 1976 & 1979....A massive favourite of mine at the time, but for some strange reason, not watched it for donkey's years....Randomly decided to watch an episode tonight, to see how it had stood the test of time. So chose episode 1, series 1, "The Testing of Eric Olthwaite" – 27 September 1977, which just happens to have a Yorkshire setting. Delighted to say it's still absolutely brilliant and I'm now going to buy the boxset....Here's that episode. I can't imagine too many wont remember it from the first time around, but if you've not seen it before, or not seen it in a long time like me, stop polishing the reinforced brass handle of your Spear & Jackson number 3 shovel, make yourself a nice black pudding door-step sandwich, put the cat out, let the lurcher in and do yourself a favour. You could do far worse with a spare half hour, even if it is raining.
